French engineering company, Thorn Bikes, is a firm believer in E85 fuel, an 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline fuel. far less expensive than normal fuel, 40% less CO2, it's one way of reducing pollution.



They have manufactured a transformation kit for injection motorcycles, that should allow any injection motorcycle to run this kind of fuel. They believe so much in it, that they've entered a Honda CBR 1000 in the upcoming 24 hour endurance race, the Bol D'Or.



Honda believe in it as well, since they've supplied the motorcycle, and Elf is backing them. Soon we'll be able to buy the kit.

What changes to I need for high altitude? This doesn't come up very often, but I though I'd throw it in anyway. At high altitudes (above ~4000 ft), your scooter will start starving for air. You'll need to place a smaller main jet in the carb, so that it will take in less fuel. A good rule of thumb is to reduce the size of the main jet by ~10% and see if that works.

You also restrict the amount of air out of the engine if you don't replace the exhaust pipe with a bigger (or more free flowing) exhaust pipe. In addition, just changing the carb changes the fuel / air ratio inside the engine. Your engine may or may not like the change. For instance, the new carb could give you more top end power, but also lead to starting problems. Or it may run better at low RPM's and poor at high RPM's. Tuning for best performance can be a lot of work!
